The International Family Law Group LLP is pleased to announce that Partner and co-founder David Hodson OBE MICArb has been awarded  Honorary Professor in Law at the University of Leicester.  The accolade was given on 29th September 2017. David was a student at Leicester (1972-75), graduating with a LLB.

David is an English solicitor, mediator, arbitrator, Australian solicitor and part-time family court judge in London.  In 2014 he was granted the OBE for ‘services to international family law’.  He is also Visiting Professor at the University of Law.

David will continue giving his annual lecture to the students at Leicester and contributing to the development of the legal education at the Law School.

David Hodson commenting on his appointment said “I am thrilled to receive this accolade. I had the most marvellous three years as a student at Leicester and it really set me up for both my future life and my career as a lawyer.  In recent years I have enjoyed the opportunity to give back to my university and to help the students, some of whom will become the lawyers of the future.  They will be working in very different circumstances to my earlier years in the profession but the essential skills, qualities and attributes remain the same.”

The University of Leicester is ranked amongst the top 1% universities in the world and has one of the most highly rated law schools in the country.  It offers both traditional undergraduate studies and a wide range of distinctive postgraduate courses.  Many law students subsequently work here or abroad in areas where international awareness is crucial.

The title of Honorary Professor at the University of Leicester is awarded to an individual of national or international standing in their field, who makes a significant and regular contribution equivalent to that of a substantive university professor.  Candidates are assessed on a number of different criteria including an extensive and international reputation for research and/or enterprise, outstanding professional achievement, recognition as a leading expert within their profession, entrepreneurial activity and unique contributions to their area of expertise.

Existing Honorary Professors of Law at Leicester University include Sir Michael Tugendhat QC, Sir Nicholas Green QC and Sir Howard Morrison QC.

Associate Professor Dr Eugenia Caracciolo Di Torella, convener of family law at the University of Leicester, said “I am delighted that David’s contribution to the Leicester Law School and to the family law course has been acknowledged and celebrated.  The course is enriched by David’s practical perspective and knowledge. Our students are very lucky to have such an amazing opportunity! I am looking forward to welcoming David in his new role.

David’s appointment will have no impact on his client work and other professional commitments.

Ann Thomas, Managing Partner at iFLG, said “I am delighted that David has been honoured in this way and it further shows that our lawyers are some of the best in the country. This honour has followed the announcement that iFLG has been placed in the second tier for family law in Legal 500 2017, described asone of the top firms in international family law in England’, with David Hodson and fellow partner Helen Blackburn being rated as Leading Individuals.”
